We’re back from 5 October with the caricature and psychological portrait workshop taught by Pedro Espinosa, a great graphic illustrator, comic artist and caricaturist who has poured heart and soul into numerous magazines and publications in Barcelona and his native La Rioja.
Tenacious, demanding and many-sided like the characters he creates, Pedro recognises and nurtures this plurality of profiles as a stimulus that enriches each artist’s personal vision:
«The caricature and experimental portrait workshop is made up of a very mixed group in age and level. Beginners and the youngest bring their freshness and spontaneity to those with more experience, some of whom are even starting to take on professional work, while these in turn spark a constant drive for improvement in the beginners…

The course’s approach centres on the physical understanding of features and the psychological perception that makes them human. It covers:
— General notions of anatomy, gesture and movement of the human figure put into practice through self-caricature exercises, portraits of classmates and exercises with famous characters.
— Various techniques and materials such as pencils and watercolours, with many discovering a tool as humble, versatile and effective as charcoal, later adding wax crayons and acrylics or tablet illustration techniques.
— Study of great artists such as El Bosco, Arcimboldo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Honoré Daumier, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Miguel de Covarrubias, Al Hirschfeld, Ralph Steadman, Philip Burke, Hanoch Piven and Robert Risko.
— Collage and image-making with objects, inspired by the 20th-century avant-gardes with elements drawn from expressionism, surrealism and cubism.
The workshop offers a broad outlook, open both to those who want to discover the art of caricature and to «veteran» pencil-hands who want to learn how to highlight the beauty we tend to hide when we look in the mirror.
