The CONfusiones exhibition opened on Thursday 1 December, with the artist and figures from the world of comics and illustration in attendance.
The cartoonist and illustrator Pedro Espinosa is exhibiting his latest work at Quei15.ART gallery.
It is an interpretation of classic works of art through the lens of comics and pop culture, with an approach that draws out the full meaning of the painting classic (CON) and its guests from the Ninth Art (fusiones).
In the artist’s own words, the thread running through the work was born from a moment of inspiration while admiring a work of art: “Contemplating Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’, I had a moment of inspiration. On the canvas appeared a young and intrepid Belgian reporter with a golden quiff, straight out of a comic strip panel. I couldn’t help myself, and set out to bring the misunderstanding to life.”
The result is a ‘collection of misunderstandings’ that takes shape in 27 watercolour plates: ‘Yellow Kid huyendo de la crítica’ (the poster’s protagonist), ‘El Sueño de Lucky Luke’, ‘La persistencia de Krazy Kat’, ‘Bat Gogh’, ‘Carlitos y las meninas’, ‘Gioconda de Vilà’ or ‘Ghost Rider a la manera de Fortunato Depero’, are some of the evocative titles of the illustrations on display and for sale until 5 January 2023.
