Help us reveal the secret hidden in its façades.
Did you know that the ornaments on the Eixample’s modernist buildings and Barcelona’s old funeral carriages share the same symbols?
In the 19th century, Barcelona tore down its walls to fill itself with light through the Pla Cerdà, while death was moved to the Poblenou cemetery. Barcelona’s bourgeoisie commissioned their funeral carriages from the very same workshops, craftsmen and architects who designed the houses on Passeig de Gràcia!
For the Barcelona Dibuixa 2026 festival, we are preparing a unique art workshop at the Museu de Carrosses Fúnebres de Barcelona. We want to find the parallels between the architecture and the ornamentation of the carriages. To do this, we need your eyes!
We invite you to stroll around, look up and photograph the decorative and sculptural elements on façades that match the funerary iconography.
We’re looking for photographs featuring:
Angels, owls, sphinxes, lion heads, acanthus leaves, pineapple-shaped finials, floral ornamentation, borders, spiral scrolls, winged orbs, fish, crosses, skulls, bats, skeletons, scythes, hearts pierced by spears, solomonic columns, etc.
How to take part?
Send us your photos by email to quei15bcn@gmail.com or via WhatsApp on 619 00 45 15 before 30 September 2026, stating the street and building where you took them.
Your images will be the starting point for the workshop «Geometries del trànsit: urbanisme, arquitectura i iconografia fúnebre»: participants will use them as a reference to find their «twin» in the carriages and, together, redraw the map of the city.
If you give us your consent, your images may be exhibited at the Museu de les Carrosses Fúnebres de Barcelona on the day of Barcelona Dibuixa 2026.
